I want to teach my pet how to talk so where do I start?
Todd and I started learning to communicate with each other in May of 2022. I can tell you from my own experience that our journey of learning to communicate with each other over the last year has been amazing, frustrating, and at times, at least for me, heartbreaking. Would I do it again? Absolutely, I wish I would have known about this sooner! Todd is an amazing learner and took to the buttons very quickly. If you think that you and your learner might like to start on this journey there are several options. First, you must realize that this is something that you will have to work at and devote time to it.
Several companies out there make recordable buttons for pets. The buttons Todd uses are made by Fluet Pet. If you are not sure if you and your pet are ready and willing to learn, then I suggest getting a few buttons to start. That way you can try it out before committing to a full kit. There are also FAQ and How to get started guides available for free download on the Fluent Pet website. There are also groups you can join of other trainers and learners where you can ask questions, share success stories and get ideas if you hit a wall in your progress.
Todd and I have an incredible bond and he was already extremely expressive for a cat, I felt he could learn this so I bought a full kit for him. In future posts, I will cover how I set my board up, teaching methods, how to talk to your learner, listening to what they say, etc. There is no single best method, you work by trial and error to find what is best for you and your learner, but I can tell you it is a wonderful feeling to see how happy Todd is being able to use the words he has and how eager he is to learn more.
